How to declutter in only 1 weekend!

It’s so easy to fall back into bad habits, especially when it comes to keeping the house clean. During the summertime it’s easy to procrastinate, when fall arrives it’s back to school and schedules begin to fill up, and by the time winter rolls around many of us just want to curl up with some hot chocolate and relax.

However, no matter what time of year it is, when your home is clutter free you’re guaranteed to be happier and less stressed. That’s why we wanted to share with you how to declutter the entire house in just one weekend.

Have a game plan

Any productive purging starts with an outline! If you try to just dive right in you may become overwhelmed and give up halfway through. Believe it or not, house cleaning takes some pre-preparation.

First and foremost, choose a weekend that you can completely dedicate to your home. No games, no appointments, no parties, just staying at home and getting organized. Then, don’t forget to enlist the help of your family! You can even make a game out of it with your kids to see who can declutter and organize the most efficiently. Is your family not able to help? Start by making a list of what you’re going to need a day or two in advance:

  • Cleaning supplies
  • Trash bags
  • Laundry baskets
  • Storage containers
  • Filing cabinet (to organize that annoying paper clutter!)
  • Label makers/markers

It might even be a good idea to plan your meals ahead of time. This can be done by preparing some freezer meals or planning to use your crockpot most of the weekend (or hey, reward yourself for a hard day’s work and order take out one night!).    

Dedicate different rooms to different days

During your pre-cleaning prep, organize which areas of the house you want to do on which day. Will you take care of organizing the mess on Saturday and finish up with dusting, sweeping, and vacuuming on Sunday? Will you dedicate the kitchen, dining, laundry, and living rooms to Saturday and the upstairs bedrooms to Sunday and clean while you go? Try to pick a process where you know you’ll be most productive. If you like seeing immediate results, try cleaning as you organize so once a room is done, it’s DONE!

Once your game plan is finalized, it’s time to wake up early Saturday morning and get moving!

Start from the beginning and go from there

Walking into a clean entryway can immediately put any mind at ease, and who doesn’t want that when they first step through the door? Get out those garbage bags and storage containers and get started! Try organizing shoes, coats, umbrellas, backpacks, and purses in a new way. It’s refreshing to spice things up.

Once your entrance is done, do a quick sweep through the entire house. Pick up straggling clothes, papers, and other clutter that’s giving you the biggest headache. Once all the obvious mess is picked up and most of your surfaces are clear, it’s much easier to see the end goal in sight.

Create piles for donations, throw aways, and storage. If weather permits you could even have this going in your backyard, if not, try the garage! When it comes to donating and getting rid of items, the most important thing to remember is to be honest with yourself. How much do you want to continue holding onto something you haven’t touched in years – or have never touched – versus just getting rid of it.
