Get To Know Our Founder: Karen Prante

At A Second Me, we focus on getting to know our customers and building relationships with them and their family members. We figured that since we spend so much time getting to know you, it’s only fair that we take some time for you to learn about us. We interviewed our founder, Karen Prante, and asked her some questions about her past career, her motivation, and her future business plans for A Second Me.

What was your career prior to founding A Second Me?

I worked at Freddie Mac, which is a secondary mortgage company. I enjoyed working at Freddie Mac, but after my schedule got more hectic at home, I decided to leave the company.

 

What inspired you to begin your own business venture and start A Second Me?

Well, I got married later and life and when I had kids, my Mom was older too. She was sick and needed me to help take care of her. At about this time, I also had my second child who was born with special needs. We didn’t know what condition he had, so we had to bring him to countless doctors appointments while juggling another child and helping to care for my mother. I felt like I had three full time jobs taking care of everyone.

I knew that I was overextending myself, so I decided to leave my job at Freddie Mac, but wanted to work from home so that I could have more flexible hours. I thought about how busy I was and how much I had wanted someone to help me with little errands and tasks, so I decided to start A Second Me. I started slow and did the groundwork, which was actually very helpful for me. Little by little I got the business to where it is today.

 

What has been your proudest moment as the owner of A Second Me?

Starting your own business is not easy, and I’m happy that I’ve stuck with it and persisted through the struggles of it. As a business owner, you have to play all roles in the company. I especially had to do this when I first started the company and could not hire people to help me with business aspects that I am not as comfortable or as talented with. It’s very rewarding to me to know that we make our clients happy and we are helping them in some way. Even if I’m not working with the customer directly, knowing that my employees are making other people’s lives better is very comforting and motivating.

 

How has A Second Me evolved since you first started the business?

A Second Me has evolved very slowly. It took me some time to build it up, and I made mistakes that I’m sure all people who have started businesses have made. I put my money into things that didn’t pan out, and I had a hard time playing some of the different roles in the company before I could hire anyone. I’m very happy with what we’ve accomplished now though. I’ve hired people that compliment my skills and also fill in with business areas that I have absolutely no experience with or don’t like doing. There are still some things that I want to improve, but I’m happy with how the company has grown, and that through it all, we’ve been able to help people along the way.

 

What are your plans for A Second Me in the future?

A Second Me has been in business for 6 years now. Although it’s had it’s ups and downs, I still have a lot of years left in me that motivate me to keep the business running and to keep growing and improving it. I do have a lot of interests and hobbies, and at this point I’m figuring out ways in which I can implement some of my interests and the interests of the employees to better help our clients and future clients.
